- Current Balancing: In normal operating conditions, the sum of the currents passing through the toroid (phase and neutral) is equal to zero, since these currents are equal and opposite. This magnetic balance keeps the torus in a non-perturbed condition.
- Leakage Detection: In the event of a leakage current to earth (for example, when part of the current does not return via the neutral conductor but is lost), the balance of the currents is disturbed. This difference causes the appearance of a magnetic flux inside the torus.
- Implementation of the Tripping Mechanism: The magnetic flux induced in the toroid generates a secondary current which is detected by a coil wound on the toroid itself. This current is amplified and used to activate the differential tripping mechanism. When a predefined current threshold is exceeded (typically 30 mA for residential use), the RCD intervenes, immediately interrupting the circuit.
