How to choose the right recessed LED spotlights?

Until now we have always talked to you about switches, home automation devices, intercoms and video intercoms. This time we will talk to you about LED spotlights with recessed installation.

Recessed spotlights represent a modern, versatile and safe source of lighting, also considering their possible low voltage and low heat emission.

Recessed LED spotlights are an alternative solution for lighting a room and can replace the classic low-energy light bulbs that were installed in those environments where the light could remain on for a long period of time, such as the kitchen .

For this reason, recessed LED spotlights have been designed, a union of quality of the light provided and technology, where the bulb and body of the spotlight can be a single element, made of metal or plaster, extremely small to be able to create particular scenarios, such as the sky starry.. This type of lighting is then recommended in every type of room: from the kitchen, to the bathroom, to the corridor precisely because they can consume less than a low-energy bulb and are able to spread a more uniform and homogeneous light.

Today, the ceiling recessed spotlight is widely used in lighting projects. It is precisely an elegant, functional and discreet solution and is always an ideal alternative to any style of the house capable of offering added value to the environment, whether it be spotlights that create diffused light in the room or whether they are recessed spotlights with a more direct light beam or directional spotlights.

Where can recessed spotlights be installed?

LED spotlights can be installed in any room of the house: from the bathroom, to the kitchen, to the entrance, to the living room. But when is it appropriate to install a recessed spotlight instead of a normal lamp?

Mainly when you don't have a particularly high ceiling and a ceiling or pendant lamp could be too invasive or when you prefer the installation of spotlights in terms of aesthetic taste. In fact, the spotlights, based on the type chosen, can create specific plays of light, illuminating in a particular way what we want to highlight. There are many types of spotlights and they differ in shape, intensity, color of the light and width of the lighting beam and it is possible to choose them with both energy-saving LED lamps and halogen lamps.

How to arrange recessed spotlights?

Spotlights can help a lot to enhance the architecture of the house because they help to highlight certain spaces or furnishings in the room.

Recessed spotlights are particularly ideal for illuminating corridors, placing them in a row allows you to design the path to follow, in small hallways for reasons of space, but also in the living room and bedroom to create atmosphere and follow the lines of the furnishings and in kitchen to illuminate the worktop.

Recessed spotlights can also be installed on the wall or on the floor and, based on their location, the type of light they have to create and the environment in which they are located, it is essential to choose the right type of lighting body. For this reason it is important to know the dimensions of the room and the characteristics of the electrical system, to also define how many spotlights to install, their positioning and the distance between the various lighting fixtures. Based on the effect you want to create, it is also important to choose the color of the spotlight's light, which can be warm or cold.

How are recessed spotlights installed?

First of all it is good to consider the dimensions of the false ceiling which must be at least 10 cm to be sure that you will not have installation problems. It is then important to evaluate the distance between one spotlight and another considering the power of the spotlight and the beam of light it produces.

Recessed spotlights represent the ideal solution for lighting in the presence of false ceilings. Before any intervention it is important to disconnect the main power supply. If we only disconnect the area circuit breaker, we still check the absence of current with a tester.

What is needed for installation?

We need 12V or 230V recessed spotlights, a transformer for 12V spotlights, a roll of electrician's tape, some electrical cables and it is essential to always respect the instructions and safety warnings on the product labels.

It is recommended to have on hand:

  • one meter,
  • a pencil,
  • the drill,
  • a hole saw,
  • a cutter,
  • a metal detector,
  • a wire stripper,
  • a pliers,
  • an insulated flat screwdriver,
  • a Phillips screwdriver
  • wire.

If we wish to illuminate paintings hanging on the wall, choose adjustable spotlights and position them at a distance equal to that between the center of the painting and the edge of the ceiling. In this case, using the metal detector, we mark with the pencil the point in the ceiling where to place the spotlight.

As regards the bathroom, the legislation imposes particular safety rules to be respected. In particular, the position of the spotlights must take into account the safety volume, the IP protection degree and the class of the spotlight. It is always advisable to request technical intervention in order to comply with the safety regulations which provide for particular measures to be respected, particularly in the bathroom. For example, no lighting is permitted in the internal volume of the pool, but only the installation of spotlights at a height of 2.25m with IP24 protection rating is permitted.

For installation, you need to obtain a hole saw with the same dimensions as the diameter of the spotlight and, placing the tip of the hole saw on the point on the ceiling marked with the pencil, proceed by drilling straight. If you don't have a hole saw available, a drywall hacksaw is sufficient. If 12V recessed spotlights have been installed, it is necessary to connect the electrical wires to the transformer, but if 230V spotlights are installed, it is sufficient to connect the electrical wires installed in the false ceiling to the terminal block.

Recessed spotlights therefore represent a valid alternative lighting solution and can completely change the aesthetic result of the environment in which they are installed. Due to their importance, however, it is good to take into consideration all the aspects we have told you about.

Now you will certainly be able to choose your recessed LED spotlights in a more informed way. Discover our selection of recessed spotlights and start lighting your home in an elegant and flexible way!
